Today's cars, light trucks, and sport-utility vehicles are high-tech marvels with digital dashboards, oxygen sensors, electronic computers, unibody construction, and more. They run better, longer, and more efficiently than models of years past.

But when it comes to repairs, some things stay the same. The following tips should help you along the way:

Do your homework before taking your vehicle in for repairs or service.

  • Read the owner's manual to learn about the vehicle's systems and components.
  • Follow the recommended service schedules.
  • Keep a log of all repairs and service.

When you think about it, you know your car better than anyone else. You drive it every day and know how it feels and sounds when everything is right. So don't ignore its warning signals.

Use all of your senses to inspect your car frequently. Check for:

  • Unusual sounds, odors, drips, leaks, smoke, warning lights, gauge readings.
  • Changes in acceleration, engine performance, gas mileage, fluid levels.
  • Worn tires, belts, hoses.
  • Problems in handling, braking, steering, vibrations.
  • Note when the problem occurs.
  • Is it constant or periodic?
  • When the vehicle is cold or after the engine has warmed up?
  • At all speeds? Only under acceleration? During braking? When shifting?
  • When did the problem first start?

Once you are at our location, communicate your findings.

  • Be prepared to describe the symptoms.
  • Carry a written list of the symptoms that you can give us.
  • Resist the temptation to suggest a specific course of repair. Just as you would with your physician, tell us where it hurts and how long it's been that way, but let the technician diagnose and recommend a remedy.

Stay involved. . . Ask questions.

  • Ask as many questions as needed to fully understand your repair. Ask for laymen terms if needed.
  • Don't rush the technician to make an on-the-spot diagnosis. You may ask to be called and apprised of the problem, course of action, and costs before work begins.
  • Before you leave, be sure you understand all shop policies regarding labor rates, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment.
  • Leave a telephone number where you can be called.

  • ust spoke with my mom who was driving from Maryland to SC when her alternator went out 100 miles from her home. She called AAA and was offered the option of being towed to Dun Rite Automotive or she could be towed all the way to her home if she preferred. She chose Dun Rite and I can say from talking to her she was THRILLED that she chose Dun Rite. The young lady at the desk was incredibly friendly and immediately made her and her new pup feel right at home, offering a fresh bowl of water for the pup. The general manager immediately diagnosed the alternator issue and ordered a NAPA warranted replacement part. He assigned 2 mechanics to the job to ensure it was completed quickly and got her back on the road before their closing time which was 45 minutes away. The new alternator was not a "rebuilt" but new and was priced at a very fair NAPA price with a very inexpensive $99 install price (plus the 20% AAA discount added in as well). As someone who has traveled the I-95 corridor and had poor experiences with breakdowns and the predatory repair service stations before, I was incredibly happy with the experience my mom described to me when working with Dun Rite Automotive. They are the real deal and I can assure you that my immediate family have been told of the experience and advised that if ever we experience any automotive problems within the Florence area, this is the shop we are going to! I felt it important to write this review to express my sincere gratitude to the people at Dun Rite Auto for the incredible professionalism and courtesy they demonstrated to my mom. You could not have made her feel more safe and secure and for that I am very grateful. As a son, there is nothing more comforting and satisfying than knowing that there are still businesses out there that believe that great customer service at a fair price is still a priority.   • While enroute to Florida from PA I ran over an animal on I95, which smashed the bottom of the radiator in my Honda Accord. I contacted AAA for a tow and they gave me 2 options, and thankfully I chose Dun-Rite (Ross at the Petro also recommended Dun-Rite). Excellent service from the time my car was towed, dealing with the insurance company, car repairs, rental car and then picking up my car on the way back from Florida. Thank You so much Brenda and team for making a very frustrating and upsetting experience not so bad after all. I got to meet all of you at least!!! Again THANK YOU!!!!

  • My sons were traveling south on 95 when his engine stop running he pulled over to the side of 95. The jeep would not start they were stranded hauling a trailer and a dog. Not knowing the area didn't know who to call or who would be honest and reliable. They called several companies and they could not guarantee they would look at his jeep on that day. It was a Friday and he didn't want to be stuck for the weekend he was starting a new job on Monday in Florida. I found Dun-Rite Automotive on the internet called and spoke with Lucas explained the situation to him. He then called my sons and towed his jeep, trailer along with the dog back to his business. The guys had been traveling all night so when they got there they were exhausted, everyone made them comfortable even the dog was welcomed. While Lucas' team worked on the jeep the guys caught a nap. It took some time to figure out the problem being "electrical" anyway the boys were back on the road before dark. As a mother I want say "Thank you for taking such good care of my sons and grand dog"

  • Last week Monday night my family and I got stuck late in evening on I-95. AAA contacted Dun Rite who came to our need very fast. Chris towed us to hotel and picked the truck up Tuesday morning. They have always been able to find the problem and fix them in a very professional manor. I also like the fact that my car is not covered in grease when I get it back (hood, fenders, floor mats, and steering wheel)are always grease free when I pick up my cars.
